The marine wardrobe at Pierre et Gilles
On the occasion of the exhibition Pierre et Gilles - mondes marins, presented until January 4, 2026, Agnès Mirambet-Paris presents and deciphers sailor clothing.
French sailors' garments have enjoyed a success story that has taken them from the deck of the boat to the catwalk of the fashion world, and then into the wardrobe of the average person. Codified in the 19th century, they gave rise to iconic pieces of clothing that can be seen in the works of Pierre et Gilles: striped knitwear, blue collars, white jackets and dark blue pea coats, berets with red pompons.
Agnès Mirambet-Paris is a historian and head curator at the Musée de l'Air et de l'Espace. She curated the exhibition. Les marins font la mode at the Musée National de la Marine and author of the catalog Pierre et Gilles, mondes Marins.
