Festival Contact Sheets
Fall is a time for photography in Deauville with the Planches Contact Festival. Centered around an artist-in-residence program, the festival invites photographers from around the world to offer a fresh perspective on Normandy. For its 17th edition, marking the bicentennial of photography, the festival explores “Generations,” a theme that spans family histories, traditions, youth, regions, and the major upheavals of our time. Some twenty artists will take over Les Franciscaines, Le Point de Vue, the beach, and public spaces.
Among them, BRUCE GILDEN and CRISTINA DE MIDDEL, leading figures at Magnum Photos, are revisiting the “Generation X” project conceived by the agency’s founders; NEWSHA TAVAKOLIAN is participating in a remote residency from Iran; ED ALCOCK, LISE SARFATI, TOM WOOD, ALAIN, and LÉO KELER present new works created in Normandy. Their projects weave together family archives, personal narratives, documentary, fiction, and memory, offering diverse perspectives on what connects and transforms us.

As they move through the exhibitions, visitors encounter childhood memories, stories of tradition, landscapes shaped by time, the struggles of a youth in search of a future, and the transformations of the rural world. From a boarding school in Honfleur to the Normandy countryside, from the villages of the Cotentin to the streets of Tehran, from rediscovered archives to contemporary portraits, each exhibition tells a unique story that sheds light on our era through the lens of photography.
For the first time, Les Franciscaines is also hosting the Swiss Life “4 Mains” Prize with the project *Ce chaos qui me donne la vie* (*This Chaos That Gives Me Life*), the result of a collaboration between photographer OLEÑKA CARRASCO and musician LA CHICA. Alongside them, the Young Photographic Creation Award spotlights FLORE PREBAY, MATHIAS BENGUIGUI, EMELINE SAUSER, and JULIETTE PAVY, while the photo4food foundation supports CLAIRE ADELFANG, SYLVIE BONNOT, CÉCILE GENEST, and TINA MERANDON, continuing its commitment to contemporary creation and solidarity.
Exhibitions, meet-and-greets, lectures, screenings, workshops, portfolio reviews, photography contests, performances, and hands-on sessions will mark this edition, which is open to all. For nearly three months, the Planches Contact Festival invites everyone to discover photography in all its forms, in the heart of Deauville and Normandy.
