From Monet to Van Gogh
When painters collected Japanese prints
Impressionists and post-impressionists collected Japanese prints and studied them passionately.
As we shall see from various examples, the discovery of Japanese art stimulated the formidable inventiveness of a whole generation of artists who drew inspiration from it freely. No geishas or kimonos in their works, but the use of codes unheard of in the West, overturning traditions and paving the way for the 20th century in painting.
With Marina Ferretti, art historian and former director of the Musée des impressionnismes Giverny.
