25ᵉ August Musical

Solos & duets

As part of the Raoul Dufy, la mélodie du bonheur exhibition at Les Franciscaines, solos and four hands by Raoul Dufy's favorite composers: Bach, Mozart, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, Milhaud and Léon Dufy, his brother.

A painter, draughtsman, engraver and ceramist, Raoul Dufy was immersed in music from an early age: he sometimes played the organ during choir rehearsals conducted by his father, and his two brothers made music their profession, playing piano and flute respectively, teaching and composing. Logically, then, music was to become a major source of inspiration for Raoul Dufy's creations: the violin was the central figure in a series of canvases, sometimes facing a score whose regular rhythms could evoke Bach... More broadly, Dufy explored the question of "tonality" in painting, playing on the intensity of a single color per canvas, as opposed to the contrast and variety of hues. His tribute to Claude Debussy, on the other hand, gives rise to a subtle palette of colors and a tangle of abstract motifs that beautifully echoes the composer's art, his way of blurring the contours of tonality and the traditional organization of musical ideas. By programming Raoul Dufy's favorite composers, this concert strives to bring together the painter's works and the musical environment in which they were created, so that his paintings can be "heard" with a keen ear and eye.
