The most beautiful color is light
While the boom in representations of Provence dates back to the development of regional painting academies around 1840, particularly in Marseille, the real craze came with the advent of Impressionism.
Paul Cézanne, Claude Monet, and soon Paul Signac and Henri-Edmond Cross, sought out dazzling light and color on the shores of the Mediterranean or in the hinterland... not forgetting Vincent Van Gogh's stay in Arles! Pierre Bonnard would say that Nice gave him "a taste of the Thousand and One Nights". From Henri Matisse to Pablo Picasso, from Georges Braque to Moïse Kisling and André Hambourg, they all drew inspiration from the region.
