Tango and its history
A lecture and concert to explore and illustrate the fascinating history of tango. Between mischief and good fortune, tango, both music and dance, captivates bodies, fascinates writers and spans time and borders.
A crossbred alchemy born in Argentina's Rio de la Plata region at the turn of the 20th century, tango is a world in itself, blending popular and learned music. Thought and emotion, dance and poetry, tango also embodies a certain conception of existence. Jean-Louis Mingalon, a long-time cultural journalist with the daily Le Monde, knows the history, the steps and the practice of tango. He offers an erudite and passionate exploration, punctuated by musical interludes featuring the great tango classics.
A musical lecture, like a free stroll, from the underworld to the chic cabarets, through the cities of its history: Buenos Aires, Paris... and Deauville, where it flourished before and after the Great War, before blossoming at the casino during the Roaring Twenties.
