The Body in all its states

NEW HANGING OF THE UNIVERSES

The subject of the Body has been chosen to be deployed in 2023 in the spaces dedicated to the collections. Naked or clothed bodies, bodies in motion or at rest, body parts, human, horse, frozen in the moment by the photographer or painter await you in the Universes.

Today, the Franciscan collections are rich in more than 6,800 works of art and are presented in the Universes in annual rotations. Faithful to its mode of presentation, decompartmentalizing culture, paintings, photographs, drawings and prints rub shoulders with books, magazines and DVDs to illustrate the theme of the year 2023, the body.

The choice of this subject was made possible by the conjunction of two major events. First, the exceptional deposit of two works by Kees Van Dongen following the exhibition Deauville me va comme un gant during the summer of 2022, and more recently the donation by the Association des Amis des Franciscaines of a work by Pierre et Gilles entitled Philomène (Mica Arganaraz).

These varied figurations of the body, born from the imagination of talented artists, are to be discovered in the Universes.

Masterpieces of the exhibition

The Franciscans' Universes feature themes related to its history, the history of the horse, and the world of entertainment, combining original works, books and digital resources.

For more than 10 years, Deauville has supported a policy of acquiring works of art from the 19th to the 21st century, which have been enriched by major donations. The collections include works by major artists who have marked the history of art, such as Boudin, Signac, Dufy, Vlaminck and Kisling. In addition, 185 works from the Paint in Normandy collection have been added, allowing paintings by Monet, Renoir, Géricault, and Courbet to be displayed at the Franciscan Museum.

The Musée des Franciscaines also holds a photographic collection of more than 1,600 prints, featuring great names in the history of photography and contemporary creations from the Planches Contact festival.
