Our wandering freedom: on horseback in the footsteps of Montaigne

Gaspard Koenig, philosopher and writer, comments on his new book, Notre vagabonde liberté: à cheval sur les traces de Montaigne (Le Point Observatory Editions, 2021). The journey on horseback that he made from June to November 2020 across Europe, a wandering to discover landscapes, lives, and people on the same paths as those taken by Montaigne in 1580.

"I know well what I am running from, but not what I am looking for", explained Montaigne about the long ride. Gaspard Kœnig also knows what he is running from: the permanent injunctions of governments and algorithms. He therefore set out on the footsteps of Montaigne, following the same route, with the same means of transport: a horse, or rather Destinada, a mare. To reach Rome, the rider and his mount traveled 2,500 kilometers during five months, passing through the Périgord, Champagne, Vosges, Bavaria and Tuscany...
The opportunity for the author to revive themes dear to Montaigne: the relationship between man and animal, the art of self-denial, religious conflicts, the diversity of cultures or the lessons of nature...
