Doctor Sir Joseph-Francis Olliffe

In July 1858, Dr. Sir Joseph-Francis Olliffe revealed to the Duc de Morny Trouville and the modest village of Deauville, nestled on the hillside of Mont Canisy. A decisive discovery that marked the starting point of the great adventure of Deauville des marais.

Born in Cork, Ireland, in 1808, he went on to study medicine in Paris, where he quickly established a brilliant reputation. Appointed physician to the British Embassy, he became one of the most sought-after practitioners in the imperial capital. His patients included the Duc de Morny. A great fan of sea bathing, like many of his British compatriots, Olliffe encouraged its development in France. In 1842, he discovered Trouville, still in its infancy, and literally fell in love with it. Seduced by the fledgling resort, he committed himself wholeheartedly to its development, building several villas and the very first casino.

The summer of 1858 marked a turning point. By introducing the Duc de Morny to Trouville and the neighboring hamlet of Deauville, still lying at the foot of Mont Canisy, Olliffe set in motion one of the most ambitious urban creations of the 19th century: the future "Deauville des marais".
