Sebastião Salgado

MEP Collection

As part of the Year of Brazil, Les Franciscaines presents an exceptional exhibition by world-renowned photographer Sebastião Salgado, drawn from the collection of the Maison Européenne de la Photographie (MEP), which has enjoyed a long and trusting relationship with the artist. The exhibition plunges visitors into theœuvre of an artist who has left his mark on the world through the power of his black-and-white photographs.

The exhibition depicts the relationship between humanity and nature, while highlighting the environmental and social challenges facing our world. From his early reports on the ravages of drought and famine in Africa (1984-1985), to his work on the condition of immigrant workers in Europe, to the Autres Amériques series (1977-1984), in which he revisits Latin America and celebrates the persistence of peasant and Indian cultures. L'œhe work of Sebastião Salgado bears witness to a profoundly universal, humanist vision.

At the end of the 1980s, he embarked on a series of major photographic frescoes. The Hand of Man (1986-1992) is a tribute to manual labor and the human condition. With Exodes (1993-2000), Sebastião Salgado follows the great population movements around the world linked to conflicts and poverty resulting from the economic transformations that are shaking up our times.

Finally, Genesis (2004-2012), the culmination of eight years of epic expeditions, shows the beauty of our planet and reveals landscapes, animals and people that have until now escaped the pressures of the modern world.
