Pierre et Gilles
Blending painting and photography in a colorful pop aesthetic, Pierre et Gilles have been playing with the codes of art history, fashion, cinema and advertising to create new contemporary icons for forty years. This exhibition highlights the maritime theme, a constant source of inspiration throughout both artists' careers. Seafarers, harbor scenes and underwater landscapes will take center stage.
The two artists take us on a dream-filled voyage to an ideal, unreal world populated by sailors and pom-pom berets. The figure of the sailor figures prominently in Pierre et Gilles' iconography, from angelic blue-eyed sailors to bulging military biceps. Sailors are synonymous with the port, the place where boats dock, but also with the nightlife district, full of drunkenness and debauchery. The party is also melancholy, with Sylvie Vartan, Isabelle Huppert and many others...

Masterpieces of the exhibition
Ambiguity permeates the entire exhibition, as in Pierre et Gilles' seabeds, which shimmer with a romantic, glittering light that also evokes the more serious reality of climate change and marine pollution. Shipwreck, a recurring theme in the history of art, is used here to evoke the AIDS epidemic.
The artists use numerous references to art history and the sacred throughout their artistic production. Under their gaze, Nina Hagen, punk icon of the 70s and 80s, becomes Amphitrite, marine nymph and wife of Poseidon. Equally surprising, Kylie Minogue is transformed into the Virgin Mary, protector of sailors.
For the first time œFor the first time, iconic works from their beginnings will be brought together with a selection of emblematic pieces from galleries and private collections. Four œworks specially created for the exhibition will be added to this rich presentation.

La Mer en Commun exhibition
The aim of this label is to encourage and recognize any initiative that contributes to the Year of the Sea's central objective of "maritimizing minds", i.e. to raise awareness of the importance of maritime issues, to foster a love of the marine world and to encourage people to take action for the ocean. For over 40 years, Pierre et Gilles have made the sea a source of inspiration and an object of reflection. While at first glance their images suggest a fascinating, idyllic maritime universe, their works denounce and alert us to plastic pollution and the inexorable disappearance of the beauty of the seabed. |
