The history of horse auctions

by Eric Hoyeau

Éric Hoyeau, a native of western France, discovered regional racing as a teenager, then went on to race as an amateur (Gentleman Rider) during his management and business studies, winning nearly 200 events.

After a brief stint in industry, he joined the subsidiary of an Irish auctioneer, Goffs France, in 1986, taking over its management in 1988 and overseeing its development until 2006, when the company merged with Les Ventes de Deauville to create Arqana on the initiative of H.S.H. Prince Aga Khan, a group of breeders and Artcurial. Under the leadership of Éric Hoyeau, Arqana is Europe's second-largest auctioneer of racehorses, with over 4,000 horses sold in 2023 for 230 million euros. During this meeting, he will talk about the history of the sales and his personal experience.
