Pays d'Auge and Deauville, two refuges for Jane Birkin
Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg met in 1968. Invited by Régine, they moved to Deauville in 1969. Charlotte was born in 1971. In 1975, Jane bought the presbytery of Cresseveuille, in the Pays d'Auge, with the cachet of the film La Moutarde me monte au nez. Transformed into an English cottage, the house in Cresseveuille was bright and warm, ideal for a reunion between a young mother and her two daughters. The couple invited Andrew Birkin, Régine, Jean-Claude Vannier and Yul Brunner, Charlotte's godfather, as neighbors from Bonnebosq.
The house was sold in 1991, after Serge Gainsbourg's death.
In early September 2021, during the American Film Festival, Jane Birkin was announced in Deauville, on stage at the C.I.D. That day, alongside Charlotte, she was to present with her: "Jane par Charlotte", the documentary film Charlotte had dedicated to her. Jane par Charlotte ", the documentary film Charlotte had dedicated to her. She was unable to attend due to illness on August 31, and Charlotte read a letter from Jane, apologizing and promising to meet up again soon.
In October 2021, Les Franciscaines evoked Serge & Jane's years in the Pays d'Auge, with Véronique Mortaigne, a song journalist with the daily Le Monde, and singer Barbara Carlotti.
Today, a few months after this unprecedented tribute, it's with a song of long sobs that Jane has come to tell us,
" I'm going away"... and our tears won't change a thing.
