André Hambourg's gardens blossom at Les Franciscaines
Through the exhibition In the Garden with André HambourgLes Franciscaines unveils an essential yet discreet motif in the painter's work: the garden. A space of observation, silence and light, it runs through his canvases like a place of deep intimacy and continuous creation.
From the structured perspectives of Parisian gardens to the lush landscapes of the Pays d'Auge and the luminous splendors of Provence, André Hambourg developed a sensitive pictorial style, attentive to the variations of living things.
In Paris, the Luxembourg Gardens became a recurring source of inspiration, witnessing his first approach to urban nature. Later, his residences became veritable open-air studios. In Provence, at Mougins and then Saint-Rémy-de-Provence, light transforms the composition: foliage vibrates under the mistral, shadows stretch, colors gain in intensity.
Last but not least, Normandy took a lasting root in his work, notably through the garden at Englesqueville-en-Auge, which became a recurring motif where his painting became more contemplative, almost meditative.
